The Military Diet

30 Thursday Mar 2017

I hosted a birthday party for my man this past weekend. I ordered way too much food and I hate wasting food. Between him and I, we tried to take it upon ourselves to eat as much of the excess as possible, which consisted of buffalo chicken tenders, pizza and cupcakes. Needless to say, I needed a quick fix/detox if you will to remove the few pounds that I gained. I turned to the Military Diet http://themilitarydiet.com/military-diet-plan/. I tried it once years ago and didn’t follow the rules, i.e. I made the tuna into tuna salad and snuck in a few extra snacks. This time, I am committed! I am on day 3, and have already consumed the breakfast and lunch allotments. I am very hungry and extremely low energy. I have been drinking lots of water and herbal tea with one cup of green tea in the morning. I have lost a total of 3 pounds since day 1. One thing to note about this diet is that I have been sleeping phenomenal but have had very crazy dreams which I attribute to the ice cream before bed. It’s mostly a mental challenge. I’ve been day dreaming about wings since I awoke this morning and thought during these three rigorous days I have yet to cheat, tonight, the final meal, may just have to be that. Wish me luck!

While reading Wolf's speech one famous saying that came to me was mind over matter. Wolf used her mind to accomplish great things and that was all that she needed.:

Written Commitment

05 Thursday Nov 2015

I, Brittany Heitz, promise the following starting Monday, November 9th:

  • To give up cheese, grains and popcorn during the week.
  • To limit all sugar intake to natural sugars, dark chocolate and red wine.
  • To allow myself whole grains, popcorn and cheese on the weekend but all other lifestyle choices hold constant, i.e. cheat meals are pretty much off the table.
  • To not buy myself anything other than a necessity, food or wine until Dec 1st.

I can honestly say since my last year in high school, when I first started working in a restaurant and realized what made certain foods bad, I’ve consistently maintained a healthy diet. I ate predominantly vegetarian for the majority of my time spent living in Manhattan, until I joined a crossfit gym, at which point I switched to Paleo. I admit though that I follow my version of paleo, because there are just some things that are too difficult and too much of a sacrifice to do. I have been stretching it lately though, abusing popcorn, cheese and weekend cheat meals. I get home from a long day of commuting, working, and going to the gym and just want to unwind by putting something tasty in my mouth. I’m starting to see how this new routine I’ve developed is hurting me. I’ve said many times that I’m giving it up but telling myself obviously hasn’t proved successful. My workout regimen is about to kick it up a notch so there is no better time to buckle down and get serious. Therefore, I’m putting it in writing. In order to achieve the level of fitness I desire, I also must be mentally strong in every way. Mind over matter when it comes to spending my money is also something I’m struggling with lately, and therefore belongs in my goal list above. So cheers to the path of a stronger me and hopes that blogging my commitments will help to keep me accountable. Bring on the results baby!

Blogged while attempting to fall asleep early.

Spoiled Charles gets his own Athlete

I’ve had a week off before starting busy season full fledge. In a matter of days I will be working around the clock through the end of April. My one major task this week was to find a solution for Charlie, since I can not be there for him like I want, he needs some type of supplemental energy release. Daycare is financially not feasible. I have had good experiences with dog walkers in the past and was planning to go this route again, but finding someone who you trust with your beloved tiny guy and coming into your home is quite a daunting task! I discovered this amazing program (based a blocked away from me coincidentally) and have my fingers crossed that it will work out as beautifully as it sounds. The program is a trained runner takes your pup on a run (length per day and times per week up to your discretion). We are going to start with twice a week for 30 minutes. Charlie is going to LoVE this. We are meeting his athlete today in hopes that he starts the program on Monday. I’m so excited for him!

I’ve been interval training at least 3 days a week and recently started suffering from what I believe to be shin splits. I figured it might be time to buy new running shoes. Of course I turn to my reliable and beloved Nike. Lucky for me I work across the street from Niketown in NYC. I picked up these gems today and can’t wait to run in them tomorrow! Gotta put the tailwinds to the test. Fingers crossed my shins heal quickly because I refuse to take time off and lose progress. The good think about Nike is they give you 30 days to wear them and try them out and you can exchange them if they aren’t a good fit.

Greengenes

I love http://www.juicegeneration.com in NYC. They do things the way that a juice bar should. Places like Jamba and smoothie king upset me. Yeah, their smoothies are delicious! It’s because they just aren’t good for you. It’s time to wake up, smell the greens, and learn to love what’s good for your body. Juice Generation tells you every ingredient in the smoothie, and they are pure, clean goodness.  I have been eating my version of paleo (post coming soon) for close to a year. I have to admit, I am bored with chicken. There are just some nights where I rather not eat. I have such a hard time coming up with ideas for dinner, especially since Mike only eats one vegetable, spinach, and no seafood. So tonight, I decided to make a replica of my favorite Juice Generation smoothie, Mr. Greengenes. I understand that green smoothies scare a lot of people. I am sure at one point I was also scared. I am one of the lucky few who came out of the womb loving vegetables. In fact my favorite baby food I have been told was spinach. therefore, I have a high tolerance for anything green, and even enjoy wheat grass shots. I know that these tid bits do not make me a reliable source on where this particular smoothie falls on the green tolerance scale, but trust me when I say, if you want to start drinking green, this is the smoothie to start with. The ingredients help this add up to a sweet, creamy delicious treat in which you will hardly notice the green flavors. Continue reading →

Formula 50 2

Anyone who knows myself and my boyfriend Mike will know that staying fit and eating clean are two things that consume us. We joke between eachother that all we do is work, workout and eat. When we first met, I was attending a crossfit gym in Greenpoint, Brooklyn which changed my life and view on fitness. I won’t contribute this to crossfit, but to the box, http://crossfitgreenpoint.com/. I have never attended any other crossfit gym, and I would venture to say 3/4 of why I was so in to this gym was the people. It is one of the many reasons why Greenpoint will always have a near and dear place in my heart. About 8 months ago, I moved from Greenpoint to Manhattan and was faced with an incredibly difficult decision. How would I find anything that could replace Greenpoint Crossfit? I actually reverse commuted back to Greenpoint for the first 2 months to attend classes but this defeated the point of my move, which was to be closer to the office. I tried to rekindle my past love for yoga, but could not find a studio I enjoyed as much as http://pureyoga.com/. I established a new love for https://www.soul-cycle.com/ and even got Mike in to it. The only problem with Soulcycle was that to use it as my only source of fitness would have put me in the financial quick sand of death. For those familiar, unless you are willing to bear the elements and keep fit outside in New York City (the cost free option), staying fit comes with a high cost. After spending hundreds of dollars on Soulcycle, the mega giant nyc gym, equinox.com, didn’t seem so costly. I convinced Mike, who was happily working out at New York Health and Racquet club to humor me by visiting Equinox. It was easy for both of us to be drawn in by everything it has to offer, from classes, to extensively stocked locker rooms, vast location choices, and the big draw – coed steam room and sauna. Needless to say, I convinced him to leave NYHRC for equinox, and granted him the pleasure of having a tag along for his workouts and the responsibility of training me. Mike would be very unhappy with me if I did not make a point to mention that he has never and will never do crossfit. We have had countless debates about the striking similarities between how he works out and crossfit, and his utter disagreement with that fact. Never the less, this was my main draw in joining his workouts. The phase that we are currently basing our workouts on is Formula 50, a 6 week fitness plan by 50 cent. I have to admit that despite his constant persuasion, I have not read the book, but he has, and I consider him my trainer for all intensive purposes, so that is enough for me. We are in the gym a minimum of 5 days a week with 2 of those days being interval training on the treadmill. Each week the workouts get harder. The best advice I can give anyone regarding staying in shape can be summed up in a few sentences. Establishing the routine and making it a habit is the hardest hurdle. Once the habit is formed, the only thing of importance is to constantly push yourself. If it’s not hard, you aren’t working hard enough. Soon this feeling of being challenged in the gym will become a craving. I look forward to going to the gym and pushing my body daily. The results are what keep me going. I can honestly say that though I didn’t think it possible to find a fitness routine that would provide me with the self gratification and the enjoyment that crossfit did, I am happily working my way through Formula 50 and feeling fulfilled. My biggest fear in leaving the crossfit world was losing my strength, but thanks to Mike, and a little help from 50, I’m on my way to being stronger than ever.
